EA's Official Stance on Paysites
"To answer your question: Yes, running a paysite featuring content for the Sims 2 is considered to be a violation of both the Electronic Arts Terms of Service and copyright law. This includes both content that is sold directly and content that is offered as part of a subscription service. Additionally, the intent behind providing these tools to the Sims 2 community was to promote the sharing of content, not commercial activity. If you know of a site that is offering Sims 2 content as a pay-service, we would ask that you please let us know so that we can take the appropriate steps to address the situation."
1. Before installing, make a copy of your Neighborhood folder and put it some place safe. This is your backup in case something goes horrible wrong and you need to reinstall the whole game. With this, you can restore your neighborhoods 100% without starting over.
2. Remove your Downloads folder. Yes, remove it. Place it temporarily on the desktop.
3. Install the new Expansion or Stuff pack. Yes, leave your Download folder on the desktop during this.
4. After install, open your Downloads folder. Do you have any hacks, any game mods, any custom foods, InSim or InTeen, any custom careers or any other files that modify game behavior? This does not include mesh recolors, clothing, hairstyles or most other Custom Content, just things which alter the game by adding a new game behavior or removing one.
5. If you do have any of these sorts of files, you must remove them.
6. Check the sources that your hacks and other files came from. Have they been updated or proven safe for the Expansion or Stuff pack you just installed? If they've been deemed compatible, go ahead and put them back in. If they've been updated, download and install the updated version. Delete any unsupported hacks from your downloads folder, these can seriously destroy your game. If you're not sure of the status of a hack, leave it out of your game until you can get some sort of confirmation that it works fine.
7. Put your Downloads folder back in. Start up the game and when you get to the Custom Content screen, remember to enable it. Most new Expansions will disable your Custom Content automatically!
8. Quit the game, now restart it. All your Custom Content will show up now and you're ready to play. Enjoy!
SecuROM is an aggressive Digital Rights Management (DRM) program manufactured by Sony and included in The Sims 2: Bon Voyage, The Sims 2: H&M Fashion Stuff, The Sims 2 Deluxe, The Sims 2: Pet Stories and The Sims 2: Castaway Stories.
What SecuROM is suppose to do is check your disc upon game start to make certain it's an authentic copy and then either shut down the game (if it's a copy) or shut down itself and allow the game to run (if it's authentic).
What SecuROM is doing instead is installing itself deep within the registry of a computer (so deep that you can't even find it without a Null key program), running a 'blacklist check' to search your entire computer for programs it considers a threat to itself and shutting those programs down or changing their settings to make them in-operable. In addition, SecuROM stays installed and active on your computer even if you remove the games it's protecting.
EA provided no warning that this program was being included and installed on the computers of Sim players.
What programs does SecuROM consider a threat?
-Most DVD Burning Programs
-Most CD Burning Programs
-Daemon Tools
-Alcohol 120%
-Most DVD-Rom Writing Drives
-Most CD Writing Drives
-Certain Brands of Printers
-Certain Brands of Scanners
-Devices Which Connect VIA the USB Port
-Many Types of Anti-Virus Programs
-Many Types of Firewalls
-Some Wireless Networks
-Windows System Restore
-Windows Firewall
-Certain Brands of Photo Printers/Sharers
-Certain Brands of Digital Cameras
-DVD Blu Ray Drives
-And Others We Don't Know About Yet
Is it a certainty that SecuROM will disable these devices?
No. At this point, EA and Sony won't disclose what devices in what combination set off SecuROM. It's a 50/50 chance that SecuROM will have any effect on your computer, you could be one of the lucky ones.
Can these devices easily be re-enabled if SecuROM does affect them?
No. If you're unlucky enough to be affected, you'll need to remove SecuROM from your computer. Unless you are skilled with editing registry keys, the most effective way is a complete reformat of your hard-drive which will ensure all traces of SecuROM are deleted. After either removing the registry keys or a reformat, your devices should function normally again but you will be unable to install or play any game containing SecuROM protection.
What should I do if I'm affected by SecuROM?
EA would like you to do nothing but the best course of action is to contact the BBB and the FTC and to save the bills for any repairs to your computer caused by SecuROM. Sony already has serious rulings against them for including similiar undisclosed DRM programs on music CDs, the function of SecuROM violates their settlement with the FTC. You may also wish to go to the Sims 2 BBS and let EA know how displeased you are.
Should I buy and install any of the Sims 2 games with SecuROM?
That's up to you. Do you feel comfortable playing Russian Roulette with your computer, knowing the company responsible won't help you if their product does indeed cause damage?
The best action you can take if all this angers you is to boycott EA, write them letters and let them know on their BBS that this is not acceptable. The only thing nessesary for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing.
